When workers become involuntarily unemployed, there are several costs associated which they will unquestionably have to bear. These could come from the fact that there are certain firm-specific skills that an individual has, thus leading to scarce opportunities for individuals searching for jobs matching their specific skills (Lazear, 2003). Moreover, the costs could be associated with the model proposed by Harris and Holmstrom (1982), in which they stated that the workers have to be assumed to be risk averse and of unknown productivity or capability, meaning, only through experience the employers can really know about an employee’s productivity, and so, in an unemployment context, there is a lack of information regarding this. Furthermore, the costs could also come from large expenses in the process of searching for a new job (Mortensen, 1986). Several other labor market frictions can also be associated with the costs borne by the workers. Owing to the high costs of unemployment present when a worker is involuntarily let go, both the worker and the firm will suffer substantial changes in their behavior. Previous literature found that, for the worker to be willing to bear the risks of unemployment, he or she will require an extra compensation which could take the form of higher wages, better working conditions or several extra benefits. This extra compensation is generally specified as compensating wage differential. Firms must, therefore, compensate the workers ex ante to bear the nontrivial costs of unemployment. More precisely, Abowd and Ashenfelter (1981) presented a model in which they proved that there is a competitive equilibrium wage rate which will vary according to the unemployment risk, concluding that the compensating wage differential varies across industries and is larger the higher the risk. Similarly, Topel (1984) found strong evidence that unemployment insurance (UI) benefits have a significant impact o n both wage differences and unemployment. More authors, such as Hamermesh and Wolfe (1990), while approaching it differently, have focused on this same idea that the workers must gain a premium to bear the risk of unemployment. The two authors also found strong evidence that a large percentage of differences in wage differentials (from 14% to 41%) can be attributed to the divergences existing in unemployment risk between industries. Several authors have studied this subject looking at it in different ways, although all of them have reached similar conclusions. The size of the premium mentioned above will be higher, the higher the risk. One can say that an increase in risk can be associated not only with a higher probability of unemployment in a given firm, but also, with an increase in the costs incurred by workers during an unemployment spell, as well as the higher the worker’s degree of risk aversion. A crucial matter for this paper is whether or not these compensating wage differentials, associated to the unemployment risk, affect the firm’s financing decisions. Though, one could look at this in another perspective, i.e., what if an increase in the leverage of the firm has an impact in the unemployment risk? An increase in the financial leverage of a company will have an impact on the company’s probability of entering into financial distress. As previously studied by several authors, Ofek (1993) found that a firm’s response to financial distress has several dimensions, one of which being employee layoffs. Since a company in financial distress usually has to lay off workers so as to be able to meet its debt obligations, this will lead to an increase in the workers’ exposure to lay off risk. Given this, it is reasonable to assume that if a firm raises its levels of leverage, the costs associated with the compensating wage differentials will also increase , owing to the increase in the risk the workers will have to bear. Despite this conclusion, this paper goes the other direction. The aim is therefore to understand what is the impact, if any, the unemployment risk has on the firm’s financing decisions. The trade-off theory, which is the traditional theory of capital structure and the one in which this paper will be focused on, stresses the existence of an optimal level of equity capital and debt. This ideal level between equity and debt can only be achieved by a balance between tax benefits and the costs of financial distress (Kraus and Litzenberger, 1973). In accordance with Myers (1984), a firm following this strategy will have to set an ideal debt-to-value ratio and then continuously move towards the goal. As stated in this theory, the total value of a levered firm will be equal to the total value of an unlevered firm plus the present value of the tax shields the firm will get from debt, less the present value of the costs of financial distress. In other words, the net present value of a debt issue will equal the net present value of the tax shields plus the net present value of the costs of financial distress.

A portrait does not merely record someone’s features, but something about whom he or she is, offering a sense of a real person’s presence. Royal Portraiture is especially unique because it has to show the status and wealth of the ruler and appeal to many. The traditions of portraiture extend back to ancient Greece and Rome, but change every century to new styles by being tweaked slightly every so often. New artists are always testing out new ways to spice up an old style of art and were willing to try slightly new and tweaked styles of painting. Portraits of Rulers became popular to assert their majesty in places from which they were absent. Many rulers ruled more than one area of land and had a broad area of land that they looked after and could not be everywhere at once. Most rulers would travel around their land constantly, but there was always still an absence when they were not around. Portraits became a way of allowing these rulers to show that they are present even if they are not physically there. Many churches would have paintings or sculptures so that even when the rulers were not around, the community could see an image of their ruler. In addition to recording appearance, portraits had social and practical functions as well. Portraiture was a way for the royals to show their lavishness, which in turn showed their dignity as a ruler. Royals had a way of wanting to flaunt their status and were able to do this through portraiture. The Portrait of John the Good by Girard d’Orleans, was important because it showed the significance of having a portrait made. This was the first profile in Northern Renaissance Art and signified a rebirth beginning. The side profile for a portrait was typical of Antique coins and medals. This new style of portrait painting emphasized the empirical. John the Good resembles Jesus in his portrait and has a â€Å"God-Like† feature. Hans Holbein did a considerable amount of Travelling throughout Europe. He was primarily a court painter, and was employed by Henry VIII and did many portraits for him. Part of why portraiture was so appealing to royals was because it could do more than show what a person looked like. The details down to the hair, fur, and jewels are extremely fine, never leaving even a single detail out to ensure that it has the quality of looking at someone in person. Overall, Royalty in Northern Renaissance Art is broad and unique. Some rulers wanted to be depicted as strong, powerful and unapproachable. Some rulers only have portraits done of their upper body, some of only their face, and some rulers had their entire bodies painted into their portraits. In The 1980s Art Punk Movement, The Only Thing The Market Liked Better

In the 1980's art punk movement, the only thing the market liked better than a hot young artist was a dead hot young artist, and it got one in Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose working life of about nine years was truncated by a heroin overdose at the age of twenty-seven. His career, both actual and posthumous, appealed to a cluster of toxic vulgarities. The artist wasinstinctual, someone outside mainstream culture and therefore not to be rated in its terms: a wild pet for the recently cultivated collector. Jean Michell Basquiat was indeed a great artist, however he was not meant to be a celebrity. Basquiat, gave the art world what they most desired, he filled a fetish about the freshness of youth, blooming among the discos of the East Side scene. Basquiat also fueled the audience's goggling appetite for self-destructive talent. This essay intends to prove that Basquiat did not deserve his celebrity status, through analysis of his drug addictions, his reckless lifestyle and his primitive a rt. Jean-Michel Basquiat lead an incredibly wild life. After his escape from suburbia into the feverish and frantic world of Soho, New York he primarily associated with the most renowned artists and celebrities. Jean-Michel's life was filled with the gods of monsters of the neo-primitive art movement, it all seemed so glamourous, he would model for Armani clothes, create famous art works with Andy Warhol, dance at studio 54 and sleep with Keith Harring and Maddona. But this is where the illusion ends. Basquiat's life was constant turmoil. He was perpetually in a drug induced haze, being addicted to more drugs than person could possibly invision. At a time he had a live in errand boy who would do nothing more than hook-up Basquiat with his drug-de jour. His habit eventually, and inevitably lead to his untimely death at the age of 28. While alive Jean-Michel was incredibly licentious, a bisexual artist/model/musician with a taste for every form of carnal expression can (as you might imagin e) get into a lot of trouble. He would unabashedly have up to ten relationships in the air at once and still feel the need to visit prostitutes and mistresses. In life Basquiat contracted numerous venereal diseases and was the very epitome of sexually irresponsibility. Basquiat's art mirrored his life. His paintings held bold strokes of beautiful colours over shoddy canvass painted with fury and distemper. While some may argue that the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat are deceptively simple many say they are sloppy works covered in irreverent text and portraits that any grade one student could imitate and improve. Basquiat would spin out art without paying any attention or care to the final product. Capitol Punishment – Sociology Essay Free Online Research Papers Over half the countries in the world consider capital punishment to be such a cruel and inhumane punishment that they no longer implement it. Of the countries that make up the other half, most are dictatorships with low standards of human rights. The United States is an exception to this statistic. While the United States has a very high standard of human rights in most cases, it still supports the use of capital punishment. One thousand prisoners have been executed by the United States government since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. While the death penalty has always been well supported by the American people, its support has consistently decreased over the years. Support of the death penalty today is at an all time low. In the past ten years, the number of people who support the death penalty dropped from eighty percent to sixty-four percent. When asked if they support the death penalty, sixty four percent of Americans said yes. However, when asked to factor in life in prison as an alternative punishment, support of the death penalty dropped below forty percent. Most people who support capital punishment do so under the assumption that the correct person is being executed. Capital punishment leaves no room for error; therefore most people assume no errors are made. However, in an imperfect world you cannot rule out error. As a matter of fact errors, in this system are not uncommon. In the past twenty five years, seventy-four people have been proven innocent and freed from death row. Numbers show that for every seven executions, one prisoner on death row is found innocent. While no one has officially been declared innocent after execution, mostly due to the fact that most don’t peruse someone’s innocence after they are gone, many credible claims have been raised. Most claims of innocence after execution are very serious. In an article written by the Huston chronicle on November 21 2005 an already executed man’s innocence proclaimed. Ruben Cantu, who was executed in Texas in 1993, both the eyewitness and co-defend ant in his prosecution came forward to say they lied. The eyewitness claims Cantu was not there, and he only testified that he was because he was pressured by the authorities and was afraid. Cantu’s co-defendant has signed a sworn affidavit stating that he allowed Cantu to be prosecuted and sentenced for a crime for which he was not present. (Huston Chronicle) Ruben Cantu’s case is just one of a handful of similar cases. While the number of innocent people mistaken for guilty may seem small compared to the number of guilty people actually punished, we have to ask how many is too many. Gerald Kogan, former chief justice of Florida Supreme Court, says â€Å"If one innocent person is executed along the way, then we can no longer justify capital punishment.† (U.S. News) Punishment of criminals is supposed to serve two main purposes. First is to protect society from the same criminal repeating its crime, and to act as a deterrent for other prospective criminals. The other purpose is to reform the criminal. Capital punishment fails in most cases. It does prevent the criminal from committing their crime again. However, it is proven that most heinous crimes worthy of the death penalty are personal and committed in the heat of the moment and are very unlikely to be repeated be the same person. While you may think that capital punishment would scare away other criminals from crime, that is not the case. If you compare crime rates of murder and other heinous crimes worthy of the death penalty of a country that uses the death penalty to one that does not, you will see there is little to no difference. The reason for this is that most murders are acts of passion in the moment, when people cannot reason or consider consequence. Also, people who plan t o kill do not plan to be caught, and truly believe they won’t be caught. Therefore, they have no reason to fear capital punishment. Capital punishment eliminates the possibility to reform a criminal. The government is supposed to consider it their duty to try to reform criminals. We have the capabilities to reform prisoners, and we can be very successful with average criminals. However, programs to reform are not offered to those on death row. If a criminal on death row is reformed, they do so on their own. By ending a criminal’s life, we close the door on opportunity to help that person better themselves and become a good person. When criminals in jail take the steps offered to them to reform and do a good job, they are rewarded. Many times their time served is reduced. However, while most criminals on death row are not offered help to reform, many do. Many prisoners on death row reform themselves into decent, remorseful people. However, no matter how refo rmed they may be, it is not taken into consideration for their punishment, and they are still executed. Capital punishment is not only about the convicted or even the victim of the capital crime. It is not just about the families or the parties involved, on the contrary it is about every man woman and child in the United States. When the Federal Government executed Timothy McVeigh it did so in the name of the people. The use of the death penalty diminishes us as human beings. A great poet once said â€Å"No man is an island entire of itself, any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.†-James Holmes. It becomes more diminishing when a man is killed on our behalf. Personally I am repulsed that the Government feels it should take the life of another human being and then do so in my name. â€Å"The increasing reliance on the death penalty diminishes all of us, it increases disrespect for human life, and offers the tragic illusion that we can teach that killing is wrong by killing.† (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.) The United Nations has made many strides toward abolishing the death penalty in all nations. To date only seventy eight countries and territories have retained the right to use the death penalty. In 1948 the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It defines in detail the rights and freedoms of individuals, and declares that â€Å"everyone has a right to life.† (UN Chronicle) Since it’s ratification in December 1948 118 member states have abolished the death penalty. A Declaration is considered a non- binding treaty, however a Covenant is legally binding. In 1966 The UN adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights or the ICCPR. This strongly encourages Member States to abolish the death penalty. However it allowed the sentence of death only in the most serious crimes. It also allows for a monitoring body of the Covenant by the Human Rights Committee. In 1989 a second optional protocol was adopted to the Covenant. It was adopt ed because many Member States felt that â€Å"abolition of the death penalty contributes to the enhancement of human dignity and progressive development of human rights.† (UN Chronicle) It allows for the death penalty only during war time and only with justifiable reason. All parties must submit reports to the Human Rights Committee to show steps taken towards the goal. This protocol says that no person under the age of eighteen or child offender can be sentenced to death ever. This protocol has been ratified by 192 countries, and is considered to be the most universally accepted human rights instrument in history. Only two countries (that are member states of the UN) have not signed it, Somalia and the United States. Despite international effort to ban capitol punishment against children it is still being applied to child offenders, although it is clearly banned under the Convention on the Rights of Children. Since 1990 eight countries has executed thirty six child of fenders. China, Pakistan, and Yemen have risen to eighteen years minimum age for application of the death penalty. However Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the United States have not outlawed such executions. Of the thirty six known execution of child offenders nineteen (over half) have taken place in the United States. Capital punishment is in no way error proof, and has resulted in the deaths of several innocent people, along with wrongful time served by many. The support of the death penalty by the American people continues to drop as more people are further educated about it. Furthermore, capital punishment is virtually ineffective at preventing crime, and therefore serves no purpose other than vengeance. Vengeance is a product of hate, it serves no good purpose. It should not be considered a good enough reason to take another person’s life. The United States is considered to have a very high standard of human rights. However on the issue of capital punishment the United States is grouped with countries whose average standard of human rights would out rage every citizen of the United States. The rest of the civilized world is moving forward at a quick pace on the issue of human rights. We soon need to step up and catch up or we will be left behind.
